Organisation for the Master Plan and Environmental Protection of Thessaloniki

Overview

The Organization of the Master Plan and Environmental Protection of Thessaloniki (in short, ORTH est.1985 by the Law 1561/85) is a legislated agency supervised by the Minister of the Environment, Energy & Climate Change for the coordination of public services and other bodies within the Greater Area of Thessaloniki (incorporating local municipalities) specifically aiming at the implementation of the area’s master plan and environmental protection programme. According to legislative authorization, ORTH maintains the ability to intervene, apply the necessary guidelines and direct the appropriate measures targeted at the environmental protection of the area with a wider physical, urban and development planning point of view.

Project Objectives

Through participation in SPECIAL, ORTH will:

  • Contribute to ensure that sustainable energy objectives are integrated with the substantial focus on economic development in the region
  • Be able to apply its improved energy competence both in the process of implementing the Master Plan of the greater area of Thessaloniki, but also build the competence of municipal planners in the region and beyond.
  • Promote the ideas of integrated actions for sustainable energy and planning into the multipliers.

Multipliers

ANETH SA - Development Agency of Thessaloniki

The Company’s main priorities and axes comprise:

  • Development planning of the Prefecture’s rural areas
  • Promotion and management of integrated development programmes of the region
  • Taking initiatives for the protection and management of the natural environment and cultural heritage
  • Providing support to Self-Government bodies in their development role
  • Providing information and technical support to the bodies and inhabitants of the countryside
  • Providing support and training to the region’s human resources, and facilitating their integration into the labour market

  • Development and monitoring of Municipal Action Plans for Sustainable Development (ENERGY FOR MAYORS project)

Axios Loudias Aliakmonas Estuaries - Management Authority
The Axios – Loudias – Aliakmonas Estuaries Management Authority was founded in 2003. Its responsibility is to manage and protect the wetland complex comprising of the Deltas of Axios and Aliakmonas rivers, the estuaries of Loudias and Gallikos rivers, the Kalohori lagoon and the saltmarsh of Alyki Kitrous. These areas are part of the European Natura 2000 network and were declared a National Park in 2009.

Technical Chamber of Greece/ Section of Central Macedonia
The Technical Chamber of Greece aims to promote science in the fields related to the specialization of its members, techniques and technology in general and their use for economic, social and cultural development of the country under the principles of sustainability and protection the environment.

Within its scope of work, the TCG serves as technical advisor to the government and with regard to its members acts towards their scientific progress, information, education and lifelong education.

Regional Union of Municipalities of Central Macedonia

It is a Local Authority organisation functioning at regional level while representing all Municipalities of Central Macedonia.Basic objectives:

  • Elaboration of needs, problems (administrative, economic, legal, institutional) of its members.
  • Intervention regarding central issues of  socio - economic life at local - regional and national level.
  • Cooperation initiatives and with other European L.A.'s organisations.

Hellenic Association of City and Regional Planners (SEMPXPA)
The Association was founded in 1998 and it constitutes the collective body of the specialty’s engineers. Full members are graduates of the Departments of Planning and Regional Development, accredited by the Technical Chamber of Greece. Other engineers with an extensive academic and professional background in City and Regional Planning, also accredited by the Technical Chamber of Greece, can become members. The aim of the association is the respond to its membersʼ needs during the practice of their profession. More specifically, the objectives of the Association include:

  • Contribution to the ongoing improvement of spatial planning in the country
  • Systematic updating on relative scientific issues (urban and regional planning and development at a local, national and European level) through announcements and electronic newsletters, as well as through a periodical special issue on Urban Planning and Development
  • Continuous briefing regarding employment opportunities in the private and public sector
  • Interventions aiming to safeguarding the plannersʼ interests etc.
